Big news at KAEIU: I’m moving! Well… not me exactly, but my office is.
Three years ago, we moved in with my in-laws, who lived just 10 minutes away walking distance. They were empty nesters with a very large apartment, and it only made sense at the time. I took over one of the rooms as my home office, and for the last three years we’ve lived together in a single bedroom.
And let me remind you, this is a New York City bedroom. Ours has squeezed in a queen bed, a toddler mattress on the floor where my older son sleeps, and a crib. After all that, we’ve got maybe two or three feet of space to spare. Needless to say, it’s been tight quarters.
Meanwhile, we held onto our old apartment and subleased it to friends. Recently my brother started looking for a place, and I realized the best solution was to take the apartment back. My office can move in, and he can have the rest of the space. Since I really only need a desk for a few hours a few times a week, it’s the perfect arrangement.
I’m excited for the kids to finally have their own room, but I’ll admit I’m a little hesitant about moving my office out. One of the biggest perks of working from home has been rolling out of bed and starting my day immediately. No commute, no prep, no wasted time, which feels especially precious when you’re balancing kids and work.
Now I’m preparing to adjust to a new normal. Sure, it’s only a 10-minute walk, but it still means more logistics and pre-planning. And rent! I haven’t had to think about that since the inception of KAEIU, and here comes another added expense.
I guess this is what growth looks like. The discomfort, the anxiety, and the leap into something bigger. My hope is that this move will give back in ways I can’t yet see, creating more room for KAEIU to expand and reach new heights. I will keep you guys posted on how it goes.
With love,
Maria
