Surprised by Possibility

School has started again, and as our family settles back into a rhythm, I’ve been actively searching for childcare. I needed someone just a few hours each morning to take my older son to school and care for my younger one so that I could work.

I assumed it would be nearly impossible. Most nannies I knew wanted full-time work, and most parents around me were struggling to find part-time care. A friend suggested I try a community site where she’d found her babysitter (who we also adore). Honestly, I thought she’d just gotten lucky. Still, I posted a listing.

Days passed. Eight to be exact and not a single inquiry came through. I felt so defeated. But then I wondered: what if the messages weren’t coming to my email? I logged back into the site and  lo and behold, there were thirty applicants waiting for me. Thirty!!! I was floored.

The lesson here for me: don’t call it quits before you’ve even tried. I had already convinced myself it was impossible, but the reality was the complete opposite. Other people's roadblocks don't have to be mine. The only way to know is to take the step.

With love,
Maria.
